Spooncarver in residence – English

🇳🇱 Read this page in Dutch here 🇳🇱

You are an experienced spooncarver (or perhaps a woodturner or other woodworker). You work with handtools, have lots of experience, and you love to teach others your craft.

How do you feel about spending 1-2 weeks in The Hague in the Netherlands? To relax, carve, or give some workshops, spread your craft, and make some money.

This is what we offer with ‘Spooncarver in residence’.

What is ‘Spooncarver in residence’?

The headquarters of Houtsnijclub Haaglanden is a fully equipped tiny house with garden, a sofa bed for 1-2 people, a kitchen with refrigerator and gas stove, and a bathroom with a toilet and shower. Around the tiny house is a small garden with shed, wood and chopping blocks. In short: the ideal space for woodworkers.

We offer you:

  • A stay in this tiny house for 1-2 weeks. You ‘pay the rent’ of the house by leaving us a handmade wooden spoon (or other object you made.
  • If you feel like, we can do an afternoon or evening session with some members of our spoonclub.
  • In addition, we can organize a paid workshop for you, to share your craft in The Netherlands (with all the revenues being yours).

Are you interested in “spooncarver in residence” or want to know more? Then feel free to contact us. We can tell you more about the possibilities and in consultation with you, we can plan the weeks in which you will be spooncarver-in-residence.

This is how it works

Your stay in the tiny house is completely free and you can use it for a week or two. In return, you leave us a handmade wooden spoon (or other object you made). And if you feel like, you might spent an afternoon or evening carving with some members of our spoonclub.

Like to make some money while teaching people your craft? We feel it’s cool if you give a workshop for woodcarvers in the Netherlands, fully paid, of course. We can organize that together with you and we can also do the promotion in The Netherlands. You decide if you want to do a workshop, what it is about and to whom you want to give it (beginners, experienced woodcarvers, etc). If you like, we can also organize multiple workshops, a multi-day event or a series of workshops with you. The proceeds of these workshops are all yours.

So you can spend a holiday in the Hague region and make money with it, while spreading your knowlegde and craft with enthusiast people in The Netherlands. How cool is that?

This is what you organize

You take care of your own travel and any travel expenses to The Netherlands. The house is about a 30-minute drive from Amsterdam and Schiphol Airport. It is about a 10-minute walk by bus. Of course, we can pick you up from the airport, or you can rent a car. At the tiny house, you can park for free.

You arrange your own food and shopping when you stay at the cottage, like you do at home (so these are no extra costs). About 10 minutes walk (or five minutes by bike) away is a good supermarket. In the house you can cook and all household goods are provided. General things like olive oil, coffee, tea, salt, etc are provided.

The tiny house has no tv or wifi, but there is a good 4G connection. You can use your own phone to go online, use social media, sent email, etc. If you would like more internet, please let us know in advance.

We also provide a good comforter with bedding, etc. If you want we can provide you with towels. It’s possible to sleep with two people on the sofa bed although it’s not really big. If you would like to, you can bring your spouse or a friend to stay with you for the period you are visiting us.

Of course we like to show you our beautiful surroundings. We can walk with you in the woods, go to the beach, visit a museum, or just go somewhere to eat with you. Don’t you want all that? You can also just enjoy being on your own or go out by yourself. You are our guest, you decide what you want.

Why do we offer spooncarver-in-residence?

We’re passionate about crafts and the talented individuals who create beautiful things. We recognize that many of you are managing tight budgets, or would like to visit the Netherlands without breaking the bank.

At the same time, we understand that numerous Dutch carvers are eager to collaborate with teachers, instructors, and carvers from abroad, aiming to learn new skills and expand their carving expertise.

Through our Spooncarver-in-Residence program, we facilitate this exchange between international carvers and the vibrant Dutch community of spoon carvers and woodworkers.
